In Matthew 6:1-18 Jesus continues to expand upon the idea that as His disciples our righteousness is to exceed that of the Pharisees. The words of Jesus take a sharp turn from moral and ethical behavior to pious and religious decisions and the motivation for why we do them. Jesus lifts up man and our Heavenly Father and ask to whom do we live, and to whom do we serve? Our tendency is to act with mans approval in mind, yet Jesus challenges that motivation and reminds us of the reward that awaits the faithful disciple.
