Shape Note Singing
FIRST SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH 9:30 - 11:30 AM
A group gathers to sing shape note music in the early American tradition from the Sacred Harp hymnal. The singing is a capella. We sit in a square, by section, facing each other: trebles (sopranos), altos, tenors (who sing the melody) and basses.
The notes of the scale each have a shape, and the group first “sings the shapes” and then the song. It sounds harder than it is. Singers new to the form are warmly welcome.
We usually have some coffee after the singing, and sometimes a potluck.
